I haven't gotten a chance to check squeak out, but have you tried a binary?
(I know, I know, but sometimes you have to...)

Subject: [PLUG] Building Squeak from source
I was inspired by Ken Dickey's talk last night at the advanced topics
meeting. I downloaded the Squeak source tarball and I'm trying to build
it, but it seems that the configure script hangs up at right after
printing this message:
checking whether doubles are stored in Squeak order... no
After that it seems to get stuck in a loop and uses up 98% of my CPU
according to top.
Anybody else try this with better success?
Phil
