Since Andrew's suggestion of mc was buried in a longer list, let me 
reiterate it.

Midnight Commander is sort of a file-manager shell program. It lets 
you copy, move, rename, examine, and even ftp files from the command 
line. If you want to peek inside tar files, gzip files, or other file 
sets (.deb, .rpm, etc.), it knows how to do that, too.

Oh, one other suggestion: Try the key combo 'Ctrl + PageUp' after 
you've run ls. Some console terminals will keep a buffer and let you 
scroll back through it.
