I can't seem to play MIDI.

I've got playmidi installed and I've doublechecked my kernel build and I
have the SBLive! MIDI support compiled.

jbrelin at person:~$ ls -l /dev/sequencer /dev/midi*
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 35, 0 Feb 24 2001 /dev/midi0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 14, 2 Feb 24 2001 /dev/midi00
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 14, 18 Feb 24 2001 /dev/midi01
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 14, 34 Feb 24 2001 /dev/midi02
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 14, 50 Feb 24 2001 /dev/midi03
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 35, 1 Feb 24 2001 /dev/midi1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 35, 2 Feb 24 2001 /dev/midi2
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 35, 3 Feb 24 2001 /dev/midi3
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 14, 1 Feb 24 2001 /dev/sequencer

Yet:
jbrelin at person:~$ playmidi agplez.midi
Playmidi 2.4 Copyright (C) 1994-1997 Nathan I. Laredo, AWE32 by Takashi

And it hangs for quite a while then exits. I assume it thinks it's
playing. No sound, though.

I also tried, by the way, the TiMiDiTy plug-in for XMMS and got
nothing... that is, xmms doesn't even recognize the midi file as something
it might even want to try to play even though the plug-in is present and
enabled in the input plug-in browser.

Any other methods I'm not trying here?
