Until I converted to Gentoo (It's an amazing piece of work!).
I used a tool called checkinstall that I would run in place of make
install after I had made from source.
It would create and RPM for me and then install it from my custom build.
I only found a couple of things it couldn't handle (I can't remember
what they were, and I believe it must have been due to a broken autoconf
configuration). It can also create Slack and Debian packages. I still
use it on all my RH boxes that I have not had the time to convert to
Gentoo.
