Another book that covers the origins of several aspects of today's
computing is _Dealers of Lightning, Xerox PARC and the Dawn of the
Computer Age_ by Michael Hiltzik. In addition to documenting the
beginnings of the mouse, overlapping windows, and laptop computers, Mr.
Hiltzik tracks the career paths of several individuals who ended up at
Apple and Microsoft. The projects they worked on at PARC laid the
foundations for MS Word, and MS Windows, and a good part of the Mac user
interface.
