Success!  Thanks everyone who nudged me in the right direction.  My debian
guru / mentor will kill me for the blunt force, but I'm still working on
debian kernel compiles vs. the rest of the Linux world.  Here's how I got my
new Sun SBUS FastEthernet card to work :
