And, as I'm sure you know, you can compromise between the two with:
LANG=en_US
LC_COLLATE=C
Of course, you could set 'LANG=C' to begin with, but then you wouldn't be
able to display high-bit Latin-1 characters, so you couldn't write things
like "Götterdämerung" or "beim Maß" or even "el Niño".
