The sourceforge site http://sourceforge.net/projects/winex/ says there has 
been no official releases which means only CVS access.

Is there a way to tell if a particular app is using DirectX and would 
benefit from the trouble of playing wineX developer?

TightVNC works just great, but of course requires a running Windows install. 
  And, no, it's not a game, it's serious beer-making software :)
