OK, seriously... I don't mean to be a dick or anything, but you should get
a nice book like Essential System Administration (from O'Reilly &
Associates) or even UNIX IN A NUTSHELL.  Hell, I've even heard good things
about some of the "for Dummies" books, though I'm absolutely appalled by
the condescending, anti-intellectual naming convention.

The questions you're asking are very basic sorts of things that should be
part of your toolbox -- I/O redirection, GNU fileutils, etc.

Spend a day with a book and some sample tasks.  You'll be glad you did.
