[PLUG] RedHat 8.0 Routing question

Help! 
Don't make me go back to Slackware! 

I have: 
1) box with a nic of 192.168.1.2
2) box with a nic of 192.168.1.1 and a nic of 10.10.10.222

2a) the box (gilgamesh- maybe I should have given it a more tractable name) with the 2 
nics has this as it's route table:
[root at gilgamesh root]# route -n

10.10.10.0      0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     0      0        0 eth1

0.0.0.0         10.10.10.1      0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0 eth1

2b) This box has "echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward"

2c) Box one and two are connected by a crossover ethernet cable between the 2 nics of  
the 192.168.1.x network

3) I can't ping 192.168.1.1 from box one (the inside box) nor can I ping 192.168.1.2 from 
two (the external box) : the result is "destination host unreachable".

So obviously (to me) I'm having some sort of network routing problem. Both computers 
are running redhat 8.0.  

Suggestions would be helpful.
