Scott,

  They are UNIX-like, or 'unices'. When you buy (or drive) a car, you find
all the expected pieces in the same places: clutch on the left, brake in the
middle, accelerator on the right; drive on the left, wheels on each corner,
etc. Brand doesn't matter -- to the functioning of the vehicle, that is.

  Same with the unices. They all work pretty much the same. Some have power
windows (oops! a pun!), others have hand cranks. Some have the fuel tank
opening on the left, others on the right. Paint schemes differ, too. But,
they're all working the same where the bits meet the wire.
