Nobody else has mentioned this, so I will....

Don't use 'cp,' use a real archiver.  E.g., 'tar,' 'cpio' or even 'zip.' 
  That will preserve all information, can be easily compressed (to get 
you more backups into the same space), and can be safely copied onto any 
backup media.

In contrast, something like 'cp' can bite you if you try copy it to some 
media.  E.g., a recent article in SysAdmin magazine mentioned making 
backup copies to CD-R, but (IIRC) didn't mention that you can't have 
long filenames or more than 1024 entries in any directory under ISO9660.
