The /etc/rc.d/init/alsa script start/stop options do the [re]store 
stuff.  Thanks for the reminder about setting the default 
configuration as root.

At least, that is how to do it by hand.. I could see some Mandrake tool
automagically doing things for you and messing up the volumes you
save/restore.
