Sendmail is an MTA (Mail Transfer Agent). It speaks SMTP for sending and
receiving email and has some limited ability to deliver email locally by
writing to a fixed mail directory (though most people these days have
sendmail hand mail over to procmail for local delivery). It is not a post
office server. You'll need to run a different daemon to provide that
service.

I kind of like the courier mail system, but there are all kinds of POP and
IMAP servers available. Try searching by protocol on

some pretty reasonable results.
