  OK. Looking in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, I find that there's a 3D Labs
Permedia 2 board installed. (AGP? I don't know, but the retailers will).
Anyway, a google search on this product revealed this insight:

"Permedia 2 On Linux

"This document outlines the steps I took to get a 3DLabs Permedia 2 card
to work with a Redhat Linux 7.1 install. This basically entails downgrading
to XFree86 3.3.6. Another machine in the lab next door had to do the same to
get a Permedia 2 to work.

"Situation notes:

"* The machine was previously working with Redhat 6.2, XFree86 3.3.6. It
was recently hacked, at which point Redhat 7.1 was installed, part of which
entails installing XFree86 4.0.3
"* The X configuration process seemed to go well, and the machine ran at
full resolution and such. However, little white lines would appear whenever
scrolling or moving windows. More importantly, xscreensaver and xlock would
crash if left on for a time. The machine could still be telnetted into, but
the console would be rendered useless with an image stuck on the screen and
an inability to switch to a virtual console. The only solution was to
reboot, killing X had no affect. It's unclear if any application would have
also crashed.
"* In an attempt to fix the problem, the machine was upgraded to XFree86
4.1.0. This was highly unstable---the machine would frequently completely
lock up to the point that it couldn't be telnetted into or pinged.
"* A machine in another lab had experienced similar problems which were
only resolved by going to 3.3.6 so the same was done to this machine. This
seems to have fixed the problem."

And when did my problems show up? Right after upgrading from RH 6.2 to
7.3. Another "Aha!" moment has occurred. So, I go buy a replacement for the
Permedia 2 and we should be OK.
