This method will change the current hostname, but it won't survive a
reboot.

In RedHat, /etc/sysconfig/network should have a line that says:
HOSTNAME=whatever.you.want

When you boot, the script /etc/rc.sysinit will read /etc/sysconfig/network
and set the hostname for you.
