Sandy already showed how to get this information by telnet, so I will just
note that Sendmail stamps its version number in all outgoing mail:

Received: (from brucek at localhost)
        by defiant.kingkon.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) id g9995Dr24903;
        Wed, 9 Oct 2002 02:05:13 -0700

if I remember correctly, the format is
(sendmail.cf version/binary version)
