I just set up Debian Woody on a sparc 10. It went pretty smoothly, other
than the debian installer not realizing that the few tasksel selections
I made would fill the (420MB) disk. 

I did have a problem with the debian sparc netboot image and an IPX (sun4c
class), where the kernel just seemed to hang on loading itself. I didn't
have a chance to diagnose it any further than that.

I don't wanna imagine how long it would take a sparc10 to bootstrap a
gentoo install.

Yes, I installed NetBSD 1.6 on the IPX I mentioned above. Once I got the
darn thing to netboot properly (needed tftp, bootpd, bootparams, and
nfsd all working), it was a pretty straightforward install.
