He is hot taking about overwriting the MBR.  You can do that without 
screwing over the partition table.  (Lilo and grub will overwrite the MBR 
as well.)

That version of XP is overwriting the *partition table*.  This causes any 
of your other data to \go away, not just be inaccesable.  (Especially 
since this step is followed by a format.)
