Didn't think of that, thanks. I just ran it and things are almost back
to normal.
Just after running sndconfig I successfully used mpg123 to play a .mp3
file. Then, I tried recording. I did have to go in and select the line
input from the mixer, again, but after that, recording began the way it
used to, complete with the "=" VU meter in gramofile.

But, now, when I try to playback the .wav file, I can see the VU meter
in the task bar responding as it should with the variations in sound
level, but no sound comes out. I didn't have to change any settings in
the mixer in the past, so I'm not sure what's going on this time.

I switched to a text console and ran sndconfig again, but it didn't
work. I switched back to the X console, closed the mixer, exited
gramofile, and hit <ctrl><alt><backspace>, which restarted X. Before
logging back in, I switched to the text console, again, and ran
sndconfig. It worked, but when I switched back to the X console and
tried to log in, X hung after I entered my password. I've managed to
confuse my Debian system with my RH system and tried running telinit 1,
expecting to get a request to go back up to another level. Instead, I
got to single user mode. So, I ran telinit 5 and watched things start up
again. I was told that new hardware was found, my CD-Burner. I'm sure
I'm going to need to do something about this in the future, but I choose
"Ignore" this time. Sound works again, but I don't know if it will keep
working, or if the CD-Burner works, right now -- I'm guessing not, but
I'm not going to test it this afternoon.

Thanks for the help. If you have any other insights, I'd appreciate
hearing them.
