[PLUG] Strange USB problem

I have a brand new Nvidia nforce based mobo. I have everything working on it except for my USB trackball. All the modules load right when I plug in and unplug the mouse I get the right kernel messages. But then when I try to cat /dev/input/mice which should be the USB mouse I get "no device". I don't have any other USB devices to test with. I do know the mouse works on the same mobo under winders. Anyone seen anything like this before? Thanks
