As far as I know, NIS is locked into DES, so any NIS solution is 
DES-bound regardless of OS.

I'm unsure whether Solaris can work with MD5 hashes with LDAP 
authentication, but I'm pretty sure it can't use them in any 
files-based scheme like passwd/shadow.
