My understanding is that the .tgz extension was developed as a
workaround for certain ancient filesystems that restricted filenames
to an 8.3 format (up to 8 characters, followed by a dot (.), followed
up up to three characters). Those filesystems couldn't handle, say,
foo.tar.gz, so it was trunctated to foo.tgz.
