I grew up on lilo, so I usually understand it better (that should
read, lilo was confusing enough that I read the documentation, but I
didn't read it for grub).  The first thing I would change about grub
to make it easir (and for all I know you can do this already) is make
it easier to tell it the default.  The zero indexed thing gets
annoying only because I have to count them to know which number to
use.

But overall, grub is better for me.  YMMV.
