Thanks - that works nicely. (Though I got some weird results initially --
my font dir. was only writeable by root, and when metafont tried to
generate the new character it couldn't -- it got replaced by a strange
little glyph that looked like 'ffi' all crammed together.  Fortunately,
the error messages were descriptive enough to quickly resolve the
problem.)
