[PLUG] rh7.3 lpd won't run

I'm a linux newbie, but not computer illiterate: i can
read the manuel and type commands on the command line.
I got & installed rh7.2 and found it had several
hundred updates and errata to apply, so i sprung for
7.3 (2.4.18-3) which then updated successfully to
18-10 via rhn. I like it.
Problem is i was stuck with "localhost.localdomain"
and wanted to change to the name of my choice. So i
read the manuels included in the boxed set, some
general off-the-shelf books and some comments in PLUG
emails, and edited /etc/host and
/etc/sysconfig/network with mc.
But lpd will not accept the changes. (error msg
something like: "get_localhost_ip failed.") I tried
re-configuring the printer, which did not work. I
printed the lpd man pages (all 22) which is over my
head. I can't find anything for configuring lpd.
i'm stuck. should i use rpm to remove lpd, then rename
and then re-install lpd? My home system will not run
on a net, so do I need lpd? if not, what?
