Matt,

  As I wrote in the original message, this was working fine through
yesterday evening.

  However, I fixed the problem!! I _think_ (but I'm not certain) that it was
a wayward 'fi' at the end of ~/.xinitrc that was orphaned when I made some
changes to the file. Other users -- and root -- could log in and start X so
I knew the problem whas somewhere in my .xinitrc.

  But, ... no errors were produced. So, I sprayed Agent Orange over the
file, selectively killing things until I got the culprit. It must have been
that 'fi' 'cause it now works.

  Time for breakfast -- at last!
