[PLUG] Mouse problems w/ XFree on Debian Laptop

So I recently installed Debian 3.0r0 on my Toshiba Satellite 315CDS and
I was having some problems getting the mouse pointer to cooperate in
XFree86 4.1.0.1. Specifically, the mouse pointer will "freeze up" after
about 15 seconds and will then move erraticaly and is generally
unresponsive. I have tried several different drivers in my XF86Config
(mouseman, MSMouse and PS/2). PS/2 is the only one that works properly,
so I don't think its a driver problem. Also, I have gpm setup and using
the mouse in the console works fine. And, it doesn't matter what window
manager I use, Gnome, ICW-WM, XTerm (for testing), the mouse displays
the same behavior. I've looked at the output from XFree, and there are
no warnings (WW) or errors (EE). Now, I know this mouse works, because
I had Redhat 7.2 installed on this laptop previously and it worked fine
in X (using Windowmaker as my WM).

So, my questions are:

1. Is there some setting I am missing? Maybe something Redhat
installed by default that debian didn't?

2. Is X4.1.0.1 the latest debian package? I noticed x4.2.1 was out on
www.xfree86.org. I did an apt-get update XFree86. How can I tell what
version of X has been .deb'ed?

3. I am assuming that X is turning off GPM... could this be a possible
problem or conflict?

Thanks
