I've had no trouble. Just open the service finder thingee (Cmd K? my 
memory fails me) and do

  smb://host.name/sharename

Typically, you'll be prompted for a username, which should be entered 
in the standard smb format:

  domain\username

The problem for us hasn't been the connections but the bloomin' 
faux-stream files that Macs insist on littering around the filesystem.
