[PLUG] mounting a win98 drive

I'm trying to mount a win98 hard drive to backup files damaged by the
klez virus, but it won't mount. I checked the drive during boot to make
sure it was hdc, and it is. (secondary master) I created a place to
mount it in /mnt (where else?)
I have not made changes to fstab, since it's a temporary situation.
I'm:
#mount -t vfat /dev/hdc /mnt/hdc
And it tells me:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
or too many mounted file systems
What am I doing wrong? man mount isn't illuminating me, neither is
googling it.
