See, there's a can of worms, because I could argue there is always a
design of some sort in mind. No meaningful code could be written
without it. But I hold such in contrast to a complete, formal design,
the necessity of which is sometimes less palpable.

If I were to define the term, I'd say a coder is one who writes code,
preferably according to a formal design, but which isn't necessarily his
own. It's a diminutive epithet, one which I often apply to myself for
the sake of modesty. We could call ourselves "software architects", but
unless your company were large enough to render such a lofty term
useful, it would seem vainglorious. Of course, having said that, I
should probably change my resume now. ;)
