[PLUG] how are uid/gid mapped between NFS server and client?

Please pardon the clueless NFS-ignorant question:

If the uid's aren't synchronized between the NFS server and client,
what happens?  Suppose user jdoe is uid 1001 on the NFS client and uid
1005 on the NFS server, what uid will own jdoe's files on the NFS
server?
