Perhaps the easiest first thing to do would be to use
"expert" installation mode to turn off automatic
hardware detection. I didn't know about this option
earlier. If it doesn't work, or I can't provide the
needed information, I can proceed with readjusting the
hardware.

Such problems are apparently not unknown in Mandrake's
support forums. This guy has a bear by the tail:

"Faut-il créer des partitions sur les Drives
(hd1a,b,c,d) ou sur RAID0/P0 et RAID0/P1 qui sont
créés par le setup du contrôleur RAID?, les drives
hda,b,c,d n'étant alors que des supports "physiques"
pour les partitions crées et gérées par le
contrôleur."
