True enough.  They once did, though, in most American cities.  Auto,
tire and oil industries did a pretty damn good job of making sure
streetcars and other forms of mass transit were scrapped to
ineffectiveness in the 1930s on a fairly grand scale.  Had they failed
in their efforts, LA would probably be livable (if you ignore the fact
it's inhabited almost exclusively by shallow morons who should have no
business having a driver's license or, for that matter, ability to
breathe to begin with).

Exactly.  Even though it's not like we have streetcars on nearly every
street like we used to, TriMet, a bicycle, and a cargo trailer is
everything you'll ever need to get around if you're within two miles
of a transit stop.  Ditch the bike and trailer and replace with a
granny cart if you're within a half mile of transit.  Everybody else
is making up excuses for overbooking their schedule or trying to
justify living centrally located to nothing.
