[PLUG] (Re)-Partitioning

On my new Debian system, I installed without partitioning (everything
except /boot is in one big root partition). This machine will be a
server (no X, usually no keyboard or monitor). I have heard that having
different partitions is a good idea, but I never really understood why.
Why would one partition a hard drive, and what is the best way to go
about it? If repartitioning is the way to go, how can I get my hands on
a parted boot disk or comparable utility? ftp.gnu.org has nothing but
placeholders stating that things will return Real Soon Now (RSN). It
has been in this state since at least Nov. 1st.
Thanks,
Evan
