One annoying aspect is that when running up2date from CLI, you must pass
it a switch, -u in order for it to actually follow through with the
updating of your system.
I assume you've already learned the --nox switch, which doesn't fire up
the gui front end?  Try up2date --help for more examples.  The --configure
switch should let you specify which packages to skip (kernel is by default
skipped).
