Me too - now.

I started out in the Linux world with RedHat 6.0... then 6.2... then
Mandrake 7.0... then 7.2... and I could hardly ever get anything to
compile. I was *sure* compiling things in Linux required you go in and
mess with the source code - way far over my head... I thought only true
Gurus and Developers compiled their own programs in Linux.

Then kernel 2.4.x wouldn't work for me on my hardware - it crashed and
burned the way it was compiled with everybody. So I ended up trying
Slackware... I can't think of anything I was unable to get to compile
under Slackware 8.0 or 8.1 or my now 9.0-early-beta. I also tried
Debian to build an LFS box - it also worked well at compiling
everything. Now I'm playing around with Gentoo - it also compiles
everything.

Read into that what you will - it seems to me RH and Mandrake's setups
lead to problems building things from scratch.
