I've had both aptitude and gnome-apt screw things up a couple of times,
good old dselect was usually capable of straightening things out.  I
like gnome-apt's search tool, but I don't use it to install packages, I
use dselect for that.  I haven't tried aptitude much, though, I guess I
should give it more than a couple of screw ups.
