Thanks Sean! I'll note that for next time. KDE was so messed up I manually 
hunted down every last app and deleted it. I also deleted /etc/kde2 and 
/etc/kde3, and /user/lib/kde3. Then used only deb 
http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1/Debian woody main for my KDE sources. 
Installed the pieces I wanted, and now everything works.

A nice crash course in Debian package management, and the joy of the --dry-run 
option.
