[PLUG] Help! Too Many Files Open????

My rh7.2 (latest updates installed) running on an 800MHz Athlon with
768MB ram and lotsa free drive space (~2GB) currently has a load
average around 690 and is complaining about having too many files
open. I dunno how the load average got so high, but it's taking hours
for various things to happen, and I don't really want to push the
reset button.

Ny question is more on the order of "how can this happen?".
