I would highly recommend looking at 'NUT', the Network UPS Tools at  
http://www.exploits.org/nut/.  Unlike almost all of the other packages I 
looked it, it attempted a generic driver interface and best of all, is 
client-server and the monitoring system can actually shutdown other 
systems.
