Posting a Red Hat question to a Debian isn't necessarily rude, but as
I'm sure you'll find from the flames you get, kinda stupid :)

Have you done an 'rpm --rebuilddb' recently?  Are there any obvious lock
files in /var/lib/rpm?  You might find you'll need to manually dump and
rebuild the RPM database using the steps described by Jeff Johnson here:
http://www.rpm.org/hintskinks/repairdb/

I've got an issue right now with my own RPM database, but haven't
actually tried to rebuild it.
