Piet,

 Early 1990s. I can find out what he had. OTOH, _any_ Mac with an optical
drive will (I assume) read the data off these disks so they can be
transferred to a modern medium. Heh, ... they're the text of books he wrote
so I bet that formatting needs to be converted, too.
