Is this at the lilo prompt?

Then your disk geometry is off.

Try loading the Redhat 9 cd, type rescue at the prompt and follow the
instructions for running chroot.

If it does not find you installation the disk is foorbared.  Consider
reinstalling.

If you are running lilo (not grub) type 
  lilo -v (check for errors).
  exit
  reboot.
  pull the cd.
  

I am not sure how to do this with grub.

Things that could cause problems:

  The drive letter changed (hda to hdb). The Kernel image was whomped. 
The MBR was whomped.  The whole drive was eaten by gnomes (insert kde
joke here).
