  Thanks for the information. What I did was replace that card with the 3Com
3c574-tx from my notebook. The 100 mbps light instantly came on. So, for
whatever reason, I need to replace the LinkSys with a card that works in
that machine.

  Now the problem is that I cannot ping or otherwise connect to the network.
All /etc/host* files are the same as on the other boxes. When I type 'route'
on that laptop, I see three entries:

Destination	Gateway		Genmask	   	Flags  Metric  Ref	Use Iface
localnet	*		255.255.255.0	U	0	0	0   eth0
loopback	*		255.0.0.0	U	0	0	0   lo
default		router1 at appl-e	0.0.0.0		UG	1	0	0   eth0

  What am I missing, please?
