You can still find motherboards without sound and video and modems, etc,
integrated onto them; it is hard (or perhaps impossible) to find one
without an IDE controller build into it though.
Personally, I don't want to go back to the bad old days - I like not
having to buy 3 cards to supply video, sound, and ethernet and have no
trouble finding motherboards that are compatible with linux. Also from
what I can remember one can buy four P4 motherboards and CPUs for the
cost of one 386mb+cpu back in the day.
