no doubt.  i use nothing but Debian; last time i needed to install on
a laptop, i downloaded the disc 1 ISO of Sarge[1].  even this, as you
know, is massive overkill -- really all you need is the bare minimum
required to get the installer connected to the 'net.  the smaller the
better, which is why the LordSutch ISOs are so cool.  but they're not
always as stable or driver-full as the official ISOs.

i tried a LordSutch ISO a year or two ago and had no luck.  you can
also try Jigdo[2], but the download takes freaking forever since it's
billions of small files.

Debian's install process needs work, no doubt.  but take comfort in
this: one reasons it's sub-optimal is that the developers never need
to use it.  once you install Debian on a machine you never need to do
it again unless you massively hose something; apt-get lets you stay
incrementally up-to-date.
