Rich,
I can't recommend a specific mp3 player, but I recommend the below criteria:
1. Requires no software, appears to your operating system (be it linux mac or windows) as a new file system (Best) OR at least has software for linux.
2. Expandable.
3. Intuitive interface.
4. "Drop" survivable.
5. Uses a generic USB cable.
Just some ideas.

Can anyone recommend an mp3 player to which music can be transferred from
the workstation? The digital music equivalent of the Walkman, I presume.
Thanks,
Rich
