The username, yes. The password, no. What's stored is a hash of the 
password. How it's compared is the user input to the password prompt is 
hashed, and the hashes are compared.

John the Ripper 
(http://freshmeat.net/projects/john/?topic_id=43%2C44%2C253%2C857%2C861) 
will crack many passwords, but it's going to take a long time on something 
thats completely random (i.e. a GOOD password).
