Check the binary size against what should be there.

Maybe run md5sum on it and compare it to somebody else on the list. Oh,
wait, I (unfortunately) inhereted a RH 8.0 box... here's my output:

[root at gate2hell root]# rpm --version
RPM version 4.1
[root at gate2hell root]# md5sum `which rpm`
912add6d3d415c5d6c0fc5115f830b71 /bin/rpm
[root at gate2hell root]# ls -l `which rpm`
-rwxr-xr-x 1 rpm rpm 2083816 Sep 4 2002 /bin/rpm

Yep. I'm running as root. Bad Rob. Bad, bad, bad Rob.....

If they don't match up, you might want to take a gander at chkrootkit.

Although, I guess I don't really know if that box has been rooted or
not. Oh well. :-)

Rob
